APRIL 9, 2020 — RELEASE
Whitney Williams issued the following statement in response to news that the state approved a mining permit to build a massive copper mine in the headwaters of the Smith River, home of the state’s largest park. The Smith is so popular that it is the state’s only river that requires a permit to float.
“Today’s permit is a slap in the face of any Montanan who cares about our public lands and waters. Let me be 100% clear: this mine should never be built. Some places are too special to mine and this is one of them. As governor, I’ll fight tooth and nail to protect our public lands, protect clean water and save the Smith.”
